Chocolate play dough

This is a smooth, non-sticky dough which holds shapes beautifully and smells like chocolate!

The kids love helping. We've made lots of play dough over the years and have experimented with various recipes.

This is my own recipe which is quick and easy. As with everything we do, it's trial and error until we come up with something that we like.

Note: These are ingredients we have in our pantry, we're not specifically endorsing any particular brand - just use what you have!
Ingredients
Dry:
1 ½ cups flour
1 cup salt
½ cup cocoa
4 tablespoons cream of tartar

Wet:
2 cups water
4 tablespoons oil (or substitute 1 tablespoon with glycerine for added elasticity and shine)
1 tablespoon chocolate essence

Put dry ingredients together in a bowl and wet ingredients in a saucepan.

Use whisk to gently combine ingredients.

Heat wet ingredients slightly to combine then pour in dry ingredients.

Whisk together quickly to remove lumps.

Mix with spoon for another minute over low heat to combine then remove.

Carefully pour the dough out and knead for a few minutes into a smooth ball. It will be quite warm but should not be very hot.

Divide and play!

When finished, store in plastic wrap or an airtight container in the fridge and it should last for ages.

If they are tempted to eat it - well there's nothing toxic in there, they'll just discover very quickly that it doesn't taste that great!

  1. Highly recommend this recipe. It smells deeelicious... I was almost tempted to bite into it. My little boy had so much fun with the play dough... rolling, squeezing, squashing, flattening, and poking. Brilliant for creative and imaginary play for little minds... equally soothing and calming. Love it!
